8 facts you didn’t know about in-vitro-fertilization (IVF)

Couple IVFA woman bearing a child is not a matter of course, but a small wonder. Many factors must come together at the right time so that a new life can come into existence. As an estimate, every 10th couple in their middle age is not able to have children. Many of these affected couples go through a nerve-wracking and time of uncertainty, in which they consider the possible methods of the modern reproductive medicine to fulfill their desire to have children . The in-vitro fertilization is one of those methods. Read the 8 most important facts about the prospects, workflow and the risks of IVF treatment:

1. Strictly speaking, IVF is not artificial insemination and does not take place in a test tube.

Although the Latin meaning of the word in-vitro fertilization is “insemination in glass”, the so-called culture dishes are used in place of the test tubes. Moreover, no artificial injection of the sperm is done, but instead the egg and the sperms are brought together, only outside of the body. The insemination is, therefore, “natural”, but only outside the body.

2. IVF is a method that can help women become pregnant, who have problems with their Fallopian tubes.

If the Fallopian tubes are not working, the egg cell cannot reach the uterus and cannot get lodged in the uterus. In the in-vitro fertilization, therefore, the mature egg cells are extracted and are brought together with the male sperm in an incubator. Thereafter, the fertilized egg cells are transferred to the uterus. In this way, the blocked Fallopian tubes can be bypassed.

3. An IVF treatment includes one complete female cycle.

On the first day of the menstrual bleeding, the maturity of the egg cell is enhanced by giving an injection, this is known as hormonal stimulation. On the ninth day of the cycle, the maturity of the follicles is checked by means of ultrasound and blood test. On the basis of this result, the time of ovulation is determined. The egg cells are taken 36 hours after the initial injection. The sperms of the male now have 24 hours for fertilizing the egg cells in the culture dish. Around the 17th day of the cycle, the fertilized egg cells can be placed back in the uterus. About ten days later, the much-awaited pregnancy test can be done with a hopefully positive result.

4. The hormonal stimulation has advantages and disadvantages.

Normally, one egg cell becomes mature in the body of a woman in each cycle. An injection of natural messengers can increase the number of the egg cells and hence also the probability of success of the treatment. Every egg cell does not develop into an embryo. If several embryos are present, the most promising one can be selected from these. Possible side-effects are an increase in the cycle symptoms, like headache and mood fluctuations. Even serious problems like over-stimulation of the ovaries cannot be ruled out. Asper experience, if a women decides to undergo an IVF treatment without hormonal stimulation, the number of treatment cycles required increases.

5. Multiple and tubal pregnancies are possible risks.

The risk of a multiple pregnancy increases, if several embryos are transferred to the uterus. In case of two embryos, the probability for a twin pregnancy is around 10%. The decision of, how many embryos should be used, is up to the couple. In exceptional cases, a tubal pregnancy can also be caused, if the embryos do not get lodged in the uterus, but instead in the Fallopian tube. Both of the cases could cause pregnancy complications.

6. The chances of success of each embryo transfer are around 30 – 40%.

A lot of factors influence the success rate of an in-vitro fertilization, including the age of the woman, the reason for infertility and the number of embryos transferred. The entire process of treatment is very fragile and does not always succeed. In this case, it can be repeated in the next cycle. The doctor clarifies, whether an interval between the cycles individually makes sense.

7. ICSI is an alternative, if the fertilization outside of the body does not succeed naturally.

Knstliche Befruchtung einer Eizelle - In-vitro-Fertilisation

In case of IVF, the sperms and the eggs should meet each other by themselves. If the sperms are too slow, too weak or too few, they can be injected directly in the egg cell in the laboratory (ICSI = Intracytoplastic Sperm Injection). This process can be successful, even when the egg membrane (amnion) is thick. During the course of the treatment, there is no difference between IVF and ICSI for the couple.

8. During the IVF treatment, one should avoid smoking and intake of caffeine and alcohol.

Drugs and poisonous pleasures of all kinds can harm the embryo and cause miscarriages and infertility. Sexual intercourse, on the other hand, can be done during an IVF cycle. Studies have even indicated that this improves the quality of the embryos.

5 ways to break into the wedding industry

Nwobu, a Nigerian American based in Philadelphia, started her MunaLuchi Bride magazine to fill a void she saw in the wedding industry. Bridal magazines, she noticed, didn't represent multicultural weddings,
"I want readers to open our magazine and to be inspired," she says. "I want them to be able to think outside of the box. I want them to see themselves," the editor-in-chief adds.
Below are five tips extracted from her experience of launching a bridal magazine.

Don't let a recession scare you

Nwobu started MunaLuchi amid the global recession, when sales of most print magazines and newspapers were falling.
"People were telling us 'you're crazy! Print is dying,'" she says. "But print is not dying. I would say it's evolving if anything, but you also have to know how to evolve and be on social media," she adds.
In addition the print magazine, MunaLuchi is also a a glossy blog. Nwobu's commitment to the magazine's digital presence has paid off: the website clocks 500,000 page views each month and boasts over half a million followers across its social media platforms.

Spot the opportunity

The Philadelphia-based entrepreneur was a guest at many famously lavish Nigerian weddings, but she noticed that the kind of nuptials she attended weren't represented in mainstream bridal publications.
"The market was very one-sided, honestly. There was very little diversity," she says. "If you picked up a bridal magazine you probably would not see any bride of color in there. You might see her in an ad as a bridesmaid or something like that, but you wouldn't see her wedding represented."
This lack of visibility gave Nwobu and her husband, who is her business partner, the push to carve a corner out of the wedding industry for multicultural brides.

Get a distributor

Nwobu printed 10,000 copies of her first issue without a clear business strategy of how she was going to sell them. She stored them in her garage while trying to find outlets that would carry MunaLuchi.
"That was a huge mistake," she says. "You are supposed to get distribution and then they place orders and then you know how many copies you have to print, so we did it backwards," she adds.
Luckily, Nwobu and her husband managed to find a distributor and MunaLuchi now prints 50,0000 copies per issue.

Don't limit yourself

Even though she is Nigerian American, Nwobu's magazine doesn't only focus on brides of her own heritage.
"It's not just Nigerian weddings it's not just African-American weddings," she says. "There are so many different aspects that make up the black woman, and then you've got the Asian weddings too. We are really a multicultural magazine," Nwobu says.

Study the market

The editor credits her success to her analytical approach, which she notes helped override her lack of publishing experience.
"I mean, we've made lots of mistakes, of course, because we didn't' know anything about publishing," she says, "but in the process we've learned so much about our market that we know our readers inside out. That's why we've been able to give them exactly what they need: because we analyze and we understand what they're looking for," Nwobu adds.

You probably won't be surprised to hear that a new report found that teens and tweens spend a lot of time watching TV, videos and movies, playing video games, reading, listening to music and checking social media, but you might be somewhat shocked (I was!) by just how much time.
On any given day, teens in the United States spend about nine hours using media for their enjoyment, according to the report by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on helping children, parents and educators navigate the world of media and technology.
Let's just put nine hours in context for a second. That's more time than teens typically spend sleeping, and more time than they spend with their parents and teachers. And the nine hours does not include time spent using media at school or for their homework.

Talking to teens about social media
Talking to teens about social media

Tweens, identified as children 8 to 12, spend about six hours, on average, consuming media, the report found.
"I think the sheer volume of media technology that kids are exposed to on a daily basis is mind-boggling," said James Steyer, chief executive officer and founder of Common Sense Media, in an interview.
"It just shows you that these kids live in this massive 24/7 digital media technology world, and it's shaping every aspect of their life. They spend far more time with media technology than any other thing in their life. This is the dominant intermediary in their life."
The report, the first large-scale study to explore tweens and teens' use of the full range of media, according to Common Sense Media, is based on a national sample of more than 2,600 young people ages 8 to 18.

Are we addicted to the Internet?
When it comes to consuming media on screens, including laptops. smartphones and tablets, teens, on average, spend more than six and a half hours on screens and tweens more than four and a half hours, the report found.
"I just think that it should be a complete wake-up call to every parent, educator, policymaker, business person (and) tech industry person that the reshaping of our media tech landscape is first and foremost affecting young people's lives and reshaping childhood and adolescence," said Steyer, who's most recent book is "Talking Back to Facebook: The Common Sense Guide to Raising Kids in the Digital Age."
Here are a few more eye-opening highlights about the media habits of Generation Z, according to the report:

No. 1: What's wrong with multitasking?

If teens are, on average, spending nine hours a day consuming media, it's not such a surprise they're often doing it while doing their homework. Half of teens say they "often" or "sometimes" use social media or watch TV while doing their homework. Some 60% say they text and more than 75% say they listen to music while working on schoolwork at home.

    Dangers of too much media?

And of the kids who multitask, most don't think it effects the quality of their work. Nearly two-thirds say watching TV or texting makes no difference and more than 50% feel the same way when it comes to social media.
"Teenagers think that multitasking during homework doesn't affect their ability to learn and ... we know it does," said Steyer, citing studies such as one at Stanford, which found dramatic differences in cognitive control and the ability to process information between heavy media multitaskers and light media multitaskers.
"It's completely obvious that you can't multitask and be as effective and competent."

No. 2: Boys choose Xbox, Girls Instagram

There are definite gender differences when it comes to media habits of teens and tweens.
Some 62% of teen boys say they enjoy playing video games "a lot" versus 20% of girls. When it comes to using social media, 44% of teen girls say they enjoy it "a lot" versus 29% for boys. Girls, on average, spend about 40 minutes more on social networks than boys, with girls spending about an hour and a half a day on social media and boys a little under an hour.

    Teen likes: The '100 club'

"I definitely think it shows that girls use media and technology today for more social interaction and boys are much more likely to be gamers, including addicted gamers," said Steyer of Common Sense Media. "There are real differences between boys and girls so that's a message to parents and educators, you have to be aware of the differences."

No. 3: The digital equality gap is real

While ours kids are growing up in a 24/7 digital world, children in lower income households have less access to technology than kids from wealthier families. Only 54% of teens in households making less than $35,000 a year have a laptop in their home versus 92% of teens in households making $100,000 a year or more.
"There's an access gap that whether you like the impact of media or technology on our kids' lives and there are pros and cons, the truth is poor kids have far less access than wealthy kids do and that's just wrong especially when Internet platforms and digital platforms are so key to everything from school to getting a job to connecting with other people," said Steyer. "So closing the digital inequality gap is a huge public-policy issue."

No. 4: Guess what? TV and music still tops

Despite all the new media tweens and teens have at their disposal -- everything from Instagram to YouTube to Xbox, tweens and teens still rank watching TV and listening to music as the activities they enjoy "a lot" and do every day, ahead of playing video games and mobile games, watching online videos and using social media. In fact, only 10% of teens ranked social media as their favorite activity.
"I think the bottom line there is it's a utility now," said Steyer referring to social media. "Increasingly kids are realizing that Facebook and Instagram and SnapChat, they go there and ... they feel they have to go there but they don't love it and that's good. In my opinion, that's good."

No. 5: 'It's a mobile world'

Consider these stats: 53% of tweens -- kids 8 to 12 -- have their own tablet (my kids will try to use this as ammunition to get a tablet of their own!), and 67% of teens have their own smartphones. Mobile devices account for 41% of all screen time for tweens and 46% for teens.
"It's a mobile world so these kids live on mobile platforms," said Steyer. "I mean if you look at the numbers, it's clear that you have this clear transformation of teens and tweens' lives through digital and mobile platforms."
The implications of this digital transformation are huge for tweens and teens, educators, policymakers and parents. For one, living and communicating via mobile devices gets in the way of empathy, said Steyer.
Texting is so much less empathetic than having a conversation in person and looking somebody in the eye and having physical or at least a verbal presence with them, he said.
Add in the issues of digital addiction and the attention and distraction implications that come with mobile devices, and "empathy is really, really under siege," he said.
"That's a huge issue in terms of society and human relationships and how young people are evolving in a social, emotional context." he added, saying more research is needed.
Common Sense Media's next study, due out next year, is about the impact of digital addiction and distraction.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide. It occurs in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 12,900 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed and about 4,100 women will die from this disease in 2015. These estimations are shocking but true. Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Women of all ages are at risk of developing this cancer after they begin having sexual intercourse.

Risk factors include unsafe sex, multiple sex partners, being overweight, use of oral contraceptives, genetics, smoking, poor immunity, multiple pregnancies and first pregnancy at a young age. One of the scariest things about this cancer is that it does not show any symptoms in its early stages. After the disease has spread to the bladder, liver, intestines or lungs, the symptoms are more prominent. Being an adult woman, if you notice any unusual changes or symptoms affecting your reproductive organs, consult your doctor.
Always bear in mind that your chances of successfully treating cervical cancer are higher if it is detected during the early stages. With the use of Pap tests and the HPV vaccination, it’s become possible to treat as well as prevent cervical cancer. With knowledge of the risk factors and warning signs of cervical cancer, you can save yourself and others from a lifetime of suffering.

Cervical Cancer Warning Signs

Here are the top 10 warning signs of cervical cancer you should not ignore.

1. Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding Most women diagnosed with cervical cancer experience irregular bleeding. An untimely bout of vaginal bleeding that occurs regularly could be an indicator of cervical cancer. It could also be due to other medical conditions, such as a hormonal imbalance, pelvic inflammatory disease or an infection in the pelvic organs. As cancer spreads to nearby tissues, it creates new, abnormal capillaries that break easily and cause bleeding. Such bleeding may happen between menstrual periods, after sexual intercourse, after menopause and even after a pelvic exam. Contact your doctor if you experience bleeding between menstrual cycles or following sexual intercourse.

2. Unusual Vaginal Discharge A little bit of clear, odorless vaginal discharge is normal. However, if vaginal discharge increases, smells foul or has an irregular appearance, it could be a sign of infection or cervical or endometrial cancer. When suffering from cervical cancer, vaginal discharge could be heavy, pale, watery, brown or mixed with blood. If you experience this symptom, report it to your doctor immediately.

3. Pain during Intercourse Painful intercourse is another important warning sign of cervical cancer. This symptom indicates advanced cervical cancer, which means the cancer has spread throughout tissues and reproductive organs. Apart from pain, you may also experience other symptoms, such as thick, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. There are other possible reasons for this particular problem, such as an infection or STD. Do not ignore this symptom. Get your cervix examined by your doctor.

4. Pelvic Pain Pelvic pain is common among women. Cramping and aches are a normal part of the menstrual cycle and do not usually indicate the presence of cancer or any other serious condition. However, pain that lasts for longer periods of time and occurs more frequently could be a sign of cervical cancer. If suffering from cervical cancer, you may experience pelvic pain at unusual times, and the pain may start suddenly at any time during the month. In addition, such pain usually does not occur unless the cancer is in a very advanced stage. If you have experience pelvic pain or pressure, visit your doctor to find out the exact cause and rule out the possibility of cancer.

5. Discomfort while Urinating Cervical cancer can also cause discomfort during urination. In fact, it is one of the most obvious and prevalent symptoms of this deadly disease. Urinary discomforts include burning, stinging or a tight sensation while urinating. Such symptoms occur when the cancer has spread to nearby tissue. This requires immediate attention to prevent further damage. However, urinary discomforts also can be due to other causes, such as a urinary tract infection, bladder problem, yeast infection or sexually transmitted disease (STD). Get checked by your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

6. Heavier and Longer Menstrual Periods Menstrual periods that are heavier and longer than normal are another common warning sign of cervical cancer. Irritation of the cervix, possibly due to spread of cervical cancer, can cause this problem. Bleeding is considered heavy if you have to change sanitary napkins or tampons more often than once every 2 hours. Apart from cancer, heavy bleeding can be due to a hormonal imbalance, fibroids, polyps, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis or thyroid, liver or kidney disease. It can even happen due to certain medications. Any change in the consistency of monthly periods should be discussed with your doctor. Remember that prevention is better than the cure.

7. Loss of Bladder Control incontinence Needing frequent bathroom breaks is common among pregnant women and people who have increased their fluid intake. If you have this problem without any known reason, it may need further evaluation. Bladder control is a primary issue when suffering from cervical cancer. It typically indicates that the cancer has spread beyond a localized area and is affecting the bladder or other parts of the urinary tract. People diagnosed with this cancer often experience loss of bladder control coupled with blood in the urine. If you have loss of bladder control (incontinence) or notice blood in your urine, consult a doctor.

8. Unexplained Weight Loss unexplained-weight-loss-opt As with other forms of cancer, unexplained weight loss can indicate cervical cancer. When suffering from cancer, the immune system works hard to fight it. The body produces small proteins called cytokines, which break down fat at a much higher rate than normal. This leads to weight loss, irrespective of your diet. If you are suddenly losing weight and have some of the other symptoms mentioned in this article, it could be due to cervical cancer. It’s important that you get a medical check

9. Constant Fatigue fatigue A busy day can wear anyone out, but with a little rest, you feel refreshed and full of energy. If you are feeling low or lack of energy most of the time, despite resting, it could be a cause for concern. When suffering from cancer, healthy red blood cells are replaced by white blood cells to fight off the disease. This causes anemia, leading to fatigue, lack of energy and loss of appetite. In addition, there is decreased oxygen supply to the body. An anemic response is a warning sign that the cancer is progressing rapidly, and you need to get it treated as quickly as possible.

10. Leg Pain leg pain Women diagnosed with cervical cancer often experience swelling and pain in their legs. When the cancer spreads, it obstructs blood flow, which causes swelling in the legs. Swollen legs often create a sore, painful sensation, making it hard to carry out your day-to-day activities. When caused by cervical cancer, the pain tends to be constant and increases in intensity over time. At times, there also may be back pain. Remember, having leg pain does not mean you have cancer.

If you have leg pain and a few more of the above-mentioned symptoms for a few weeks, it is best to get yourself checked by a doctor. Preventive Tips Women between 20 and 30 years old should get a screening every 3 years. Those 30 to 65 years old should be screened every 3 to 5 years. Get an HPV vaccination before your early 20s.

Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Take the right steps to prevent STDs. This will help reduce your risk of cervical cancer. Resources: http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cervicalcancer/detailedguide/cervical-cancer-key-statistics
